This was Indonesia's first LNG project, and it was to produce 1.5 million tonnes of LNG annually by refining feed gas at Lhokseumawe, Aceh Province in northern Sumatra Island, piped from a gas field in the Arun area, northern part of the same island. JGC landed this contract from the state-owned oil company, PERTAMINA of Indonesia, in 1984, and the plant was completed in 1986.
At the time of landing the contract, the world was experiencing an economic downturn and there were few projects available, resulting in extreme competition. However, JGC succeeded in landing the contract upon winning high overall appraisal for the wealth of experience, past achievements and refined project management capabilities the company had in the field of LNG, as well as cost competitiveness, etc.
The successful completion of this project established a reputation for JGC as a contractor capable of full execution of large-scale projects, which has since led to the landing of numerous contracts.
